Are you an internationally experienced ophthalmologist with strong clinical leadership and healthcare development experience? SPETIV Consulting is seeking a highly qualified Consultant Medical Director (Ophthalmology) / Eye Centre Development Advisor to help establish a state-of-the-art ophthalmology and vision centre in Douala, Cameroon.

This is a senior consultancy opportunity for an ophthalmology specialist who can provide strategic and technical leadership throughout the planning, setup, commissioning and initial operational phases of the new facility.

The consultancy will run for 6–12 months and may be renewable, with the successful candidate expected to start as soon as possible.

About the Consultant Medical Director Ophthalmology Role

The successful consultant will help shape the clinical vision of the proposed eye centre, with the ambition of developing it into a leading referral eye hospital in Central Africa.

The position combines clinical leadership, hospital development, equipment planning, recruitment, training, quality management and partnership development.

The consultant will advise on international best practices and help establish systems capable of supporting high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

The Consultant Medical Director Ophthalmology will be responsible for several major areas, including:

  • Advising on the design and development of a comprehensive reference ophthalmology centre.
  • Developing the clinical vision, service portfolio and growth strategy.
  • Establishing clinical policies, protocols, operational standards and quality assurance systems.
  • Assessing and recommending ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical equipment.
  • Developing equipment specifications and procurement strategies.
  • Supporting vendor evaluation, installation, commissioning and validation.
  • Helping establish General Ophthalmology, Glaucoma, Retina, Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery services.
  • Supporting Pediatric Ophthalmology, Neuro-Ophthalmology and Oculoplastics services.
  • Developing optical, low-vision, diagnostic imaging and community eye-health services.
  • Developing staffing plans and organizational structures.
  • Supporting the recruitment of ophthalmologists and subspecialists.
  • Establishing training, mentorship and continuing professional development programmes.
  • Building relationships with hospitals, NGOs, eye institutes and professional networks.
  • Supporting accreditation and quality certification initiatives.
  • Developing partnerships with donors, foundations and global eye-health organizations.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

Applicants should have a Medical Degree recognized by the relevant regulatory authority and a specialist qualification in Ophthalmology.

The position requires a minimum of 15 years of post-specialization experience.

Ideal candidates should also have:

  • Experience establishing, managing or advising ophthalmology centres, eye hospitals or vision institutes.
  • Strong knowledge of ophthalmic equipment, technology and procurement.
  • Demonstrated leadership in clinical governance and quality management.
  • Experience with healthcare operations.
  • An extensive international professional network within ophthalmology.
  • Experience working in Africa or emerging healthcare markets, which is highly desirable.

Expertise in glaucoma, retina, cataract surgery, cornea or hospital management will be an additional advantage.
