Instrumentation Engineer Job Responsibilities

The Instrumentation Engineer will be responsible for planning and controlling day-to-day maintenance activities in line with production requirements. The role also involves engineering project management, technical documentation, instrumentation design and control-system activities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing instrument indexes from P&IDs.
  • Listing instruments and preparing detailed technical specifications.
  • Comparing different instrument manufacturers and communicating with vendors on technical queries.
  • Reviewing instrument loop diagrams and conducting loop checks.
  • Preparing technical bid evaluations and technical recommendations for instruments and control systems.
  • Preparing logic diagrams and verifying alarms and interlocks in the field.
  • Applying knowledge of HAZOP and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting level, flow and pressure transmitters.
  • Working with gas detectors, analyzers, control valves, weighing systems, pH and conductivity analyzers.
  • Identifying and maintaining critical instrumentation spares.
  • Leading a team of approximately 5 to 10 technicians.
  • Resolving plant instrumentation problems independently.
  • Conducting root cause analysis of instrumentation breakdowns and presenting appropriate solutions to management.
  • Commissioning instruments and control systems according to OEM guidelines.
  • Working with control valves, flush-bottom valves, shut-off valves and manual, electrical and pneumatic actuators.
  • Working with PLC, SCADA and DCS systems, including modifications and programming.
  • Applying knowledge of Allen-Bradley and Siemens S7-1500 systems.
  • Using SAP ERP for relevant engineering and maintenance activities.
  • Working with CEMS systems and their connection with GPCB/CPCB requirements.
  • Preparing I/O schedules, logic diagrams, cable schedules and instrument datasheets.
  • Handling control-system deliverables, including telecommunications specifications and system block diagrams.
  • Participating in engineering projects and monitoring project progress.
  • Preparing engineering documentation, including design bases, specifications and datasheets.
